Solving that Addiction

Ugh. I'm not excited about writing on this difficult topic. Though this is difficult it is a topic that we should be open to discussing. It is something that needs to be discussed if we ever want to get over it. Yeah, the things that need to be in a conversation are often the hardest to mention. So let's stop beating around the bush and GO.

Firstly, I want to mention that addiction can look so very different amongst people. The actual addiction can be to various things: alcohol, drugs, sugar, porn, sex- yeah it varies. The effects of addiction can be so tremendously different that they could harm someone or be simply dismissed.

Secondly, the treatment depends upon the actual addiction and the effects. Once the addiction is discovered, the treatment course can be figured. One of the most important aspects of any course of treatment/ recovery is support. Emotional, physical support system of caretakers, family, and friends is so very important. Often one of the most difficult aspects to gain because often before treatment hurt has occurred but then again it makes such a difference.

I have been fortunate to have felt the effects of addiction. Yet, I see the effects it has on people around me through observations, movies, and music. Oh yeah it is everywhere.

One of the parts of addiction that scares me the most is how hidden it is. The addict may hide this illness out of fear, embarrassment, disgust, obligation- whatever. When a loved one hides the effects of an addict- scars, empty bottles, bruises, tears- it makes it worse. Sometimes it is for safety, but the ultimate safety is speaking up a trustful adult. It pains me to think of women who are beaten, putting on a brave face for their own children and parents because their spouse comes home drunk sometimes. Or when a teenager lies to his parents about what he was doing on his laptop when it was porn he was seeing. Such deep holes addicts can dig for themselves.

Help exists. HELP EXISTS. I needed to say that twice because I want to emphasize that you are not alone in this struggle. Resources exist to HELP you. Not embarrass

or cause harm to you but to actually give you the guidance you need to overcome this addiction. It is an actual illness and just like diabetes or heart disease, it should be treated.
